Causes of Tooth Decay

When germs in your mouth produce acids, these acids can corrode your tooth and lead to tooth decay. Untreated tooth decays lead to pain, tooth loss, and infection. A tooth has three layers, namely enamel, dentin, and pulp. The hard outer layer is the enamel, the middle layer is the dentin, and the fragment in the center that contains the nerves and blood vessels is called the pulp. The more layers affected by the tooth decay, the worse the damage.

Bacteria is the foremost cause of tooth decay. A substance called plaque that is sticky and clear forms on your teeth and gums. The plaque promotes the growth of bacteria, which, as a result, feeds on the sugars from the food you consume. These bacteria produce acids each time they feed, and these acids wreck your tooth enamel over time, leading to tooth decay. You are highly likely to be affected by tooth decay:

  • If you do not floss, brush regularly or fail to visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings.
  • If you consume too much sugar and carbohydrates.
  • If you do not use a toothpaste with Fluoride, which plays a significant role in preventing tooth decay. Fluoride makes your teeth resistant to acids and bacteria.
  • If you are diabetic or a smoker, you are highly prone to tooth decay. Consistently breathing secondhand smoke can also cause tooth decays.
  • Children are more prone than adults to tooth decay as the minerals in new and growing teeth are not strong enough to combat the acids produced by bacteria

What are the symptoms of Tooth decay?

Tooth decays are generally asymptomatic until you spot a cavity in your tooth or an infection. However some of the commonly reported tooth decay symptoms are toothaches, inflammation of gums above a sore tooth, bad breath, weird taste in your mouth, black spots on your teeth (watch out for grey, brown and white spots too).

If you are suffering from a terrible toothache, make an appointment with our Calgary family dentist immediately. Tooth decays do not auto-heal with time, but instead, the infection spreads steadily.

How can I prevent tooth decay?

You can prevent tooth decay by taking proper care of your teeth. Brush and floss your teeth twice a day. Switch to a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Schedule a dental appointment at least once or twice a year for cleanup or general check-up. Avoid snacking on sugars and carbs before bedtime.

Avoid regular intake of sugary foods such as sodas, coffee, cereals, desserts, chocolates, raisins, and taffy. Avoid smoking and stay away from cigarette smoke. Our Calgary family dentist is highly skilled, well-experienced, and the locals’ favorite. Call Sandstone Dental today to know more about our treatment plans, prices, and hours of operation.
